Wie is er vroeger (en dan bedoelen we écht vroeger) niet mee opgegroeid: verwarmende balsem (jawel van vóór tijgerbalsem), srl gelei, arnica zalf, klovenzalf, inhalatiezalf (jawel van vóór Vaporub) en lippencrème (van vóór Purol) en niet te vergeten alle prachtige tincturen zoals Echinacea en vlierbessen, en natuurlijk de etherische oliën?
Het begon met een encyclopedie
Jarenlang heb ik een passie voor mooie, natuurlijke en pure producten. Medio 2021 kreeg ik van een zakenrelatie en vriend een volledige papieren kopie van zijn Pharmaceutische Encyclopedie uit 1955. Met als passende ondertitel 'Bevattende alle gegevens omtrent herkomst, samenstelling en gebruik van de meest voorkomende drogerijen, chemicaliën en geneesmiddelen.'.
En toen leerde ik iets nieuws: waar merkeigenaren nu hun formuleringen geheim houden, stonden alle basisformuleringen meer dan 60 jaar geleden gewoon allemaal in een encyclopedie verzameld ;-) En weet je waarom? Dat was makkelijk: kennis delen met drogisterijen, farmaceuten en apothekers. Een beetje apotheker of drogist maakte zijn eigen arnicazalf, calendula crème en verwarmende balsem gewoon zelf, op basis van die recepten, en verkocht ze voor 3 gulden of 4 voor een tientje aan de toonbank.
Wauw! Ja, daar werd ik ook wel even stil van.
Stabiele, goedkope en altijd beschikbare synthese
In de jaren die na deze encyclopedie volgden, zijn er talloze synthetische ingrediënten opgedoken in diverse basisrecepten. Denk maar aan vaseline, petroleum en paraffine. Heerlijk stabiel, waardoor een crème lekker smeerbaar werd en minder snel ranzig werd, natuurlijk altijd voorradig omdat het uit een fabriek komt, en... spotgoedkoop! Dus massaal werd er overgestapt, natuurlijk niet alleen voor de poen, maar ook vanuit de overtuiging dat stabiliteit van producten essentieel is.

Geef de gek een encyclopedie, 24 uur per dag én de beschikking over een formulator uit de tijd van Van Toen, jawel, degene van wie ik de encyclopedie kreeg van toen. En de uitdaging was geboren:
