The Swiss pine (Pinus cembra) grows in the Alps and the Carpathians to just below the tree line, sometimes up to almost 3000 meters. In other parts of Europe, Swiss pine is planted as an ornamental tree or for forestry. It can also be found in the vast coniferous forests of Central Asia. The tree grows to a height of about 25 meters. The scientific name refers to the native Italian name of the tree. The tree is called Zirbelkiefer in Austria and Bavaria. In Switzerland, the Swiss pine is called Zirbe or Arve.
